I was standing on a balcony in Mexico, looking out over a view most people spend their whole lives trying to earn. I had the money. I had the success. I had the travel. I had a pretty girl on my arm. I had everything I thought I wanted that would make me happy.
And inside, I felt like I was dying.
That night I asked myself a question I'd been avoiding for years: if I finally have everything I said I wanted, why do I still feel empty? The answer came slower than I expected, but once it landed, it changed the direction of my entire life. I wasn't chasing money. I was chasing purpose, and I'd been calling it by the wrong name.
This is the first of the Five Paths I talk about in My Ultimate Life — Purpose, Love, Money, Health, and Transformation. I'm starting here because everything else stands on top of it. You can master every other Path and still feel hollow if you don't know why any of it matters. Purpose is what turns a well-managed life into a life that actually feels like yours.
What Purpose Actually Is
Purpose isn't your job title. It isn't a five-year plan, and it isn't something you find once and check off a list.
Purpose is the "why" underneath the "what." It's the reason you get out of bed with energy instead of obligation. It's the thread that makes your work, your relationships, and even your hardest seasons mean something, instead of just happening to you.
Here's a distinction that took me over a decade to understand: chasing success and chasing meaning are not the same pursuit, even though they can look identical from the outside. Success asks, "How much can I get?" Purpose asks, "What am I here to give?" You can win at the first question for years and still lose at the second one completely.
My Story — Everything Looked Perfect, and I Was Dying Inside
Before that night in Mexico, I had built one of the top-performing teams in my company — over a million dollars a month moving through my organization, thousands of people across dozens of countries, a personal income most people would call a dream come true. I was 1% percentile territory, if the numbers were the whole story.
From the outside, it looked amazing. I was posting the wins, sharing the trips, showing up in all the ways that were supposed to prove I'd made it. But underneath the surface, something didn't add up. I'd hit a number and feel nothing. I'd hit a bigger number and feel the same nothing, just with better lighting.
That gap — between how good it looked and how empty it felt — is what finally stopped me. Not a crisis, not a rock bottom. Just a quiet, undeniable realization that I had built an entire life around the wrong goal. I wasn't actually after the income. I was after the feeling I thought the income would give me: that my life mattered. And you can't buy that feeling. You can only build it, on purpose, from the inside out.
The Whisper You Keep Ignoring
Here's what I've come to believe: purpose doesn't need to be discovered so much as it needs to be heard. It's already speaking. Most of us just keep the volume so high on everything else — the next goal, the next scroll, the next distraction — that we never actually sit still long enough to catch it.
I call it the whisper, because that's exactly what it felt like the first time I actually listened. Not a lightning bolt. Not a sign in the sky. Just a quiet, persistent nudge that had been trying to get my attention for years, underneath all the noise I'd built to drown it out.
Shortly after that trip, I made a decision that reshaped the next chapter of my life. I stopped running from the quiet and started paying attention to it instead. That single shift — choosing to listen instead of drown it out — did more for my direction than any goal I'd ever chased.
Sit with this for a moment: Where in your life have you been turning up the noise instead of listening to the whisper?
Why Finding Your Purpose Changes Everything
Once I had a real answer to "why," everything else in my life started organizing itself around it. Decisions that used to feel complicated got simple. Opportunities that used to tempt me stopped having any pull at all, because I could finally measure them against something real.
This is what I want you to understand about Purpose as the first of the Five Paths: it's the compass for the other four. Love without purpose can still feel isolating. Money without purpose becomes a cage instead of freedom. Health without purpose turns into another item on a checklist instead of something you actually protect. But once Purpose is in place, those other Paths stop being separate goals you're juggling — they become expressions of the same "why."
How to Start Finding Your Own Purpose
You don't need certainty to begin. You don't need a mission statement or a five-year plan. You need a handful of honest questions and the willingness to actually sit with the answers.
Here's where I'd start:
- Ask "why" until you hit something real. Most of what we say we want is a surface answer. Ask why you want it. Then ask why again. Usually by the third or fourth "why," you hit something that actually feels true.
- Pay attention to what makes you feel alive. Not impressive. Not profitable. Alive. Write it down for a few weeks and look for the pattern.
- Look at your pain, not just your passion. Some of the clearest purpose I've ever seen in people — including myself — came out of the exact thing they went through and wished no one else had to. What have you gone through that your experience could help someone else with?
- Ask yourself this: If money were no issue at all, what type of work would you actually be doing? Not as a fantasy — as data. That answer is telling you something real about what you value, even if the path to get there isn't obvious yet.
None of these questions require you to have it all figured out. They just require you to start listening again.
Take a few minutes today, away from your phone, and sit with two questions:
- If money was no issue, what type of work would you be doing?
- What is the whisper you've been turning up the noise to avoid?
Write down whatever comes up, even if it feels incomplete or unrealistic. Purpose rarely arrives fully formed. It arrives as a thread, and your job is just to keep pulling it.
If this is a path you want to walk more deliberately, the Purpose section of my upcoming book, My Ultimate Life (releasing December 12), is built to walk you through it step by step — not just to inspire you, but to give you a real process to work through.
Wherever You Are Right Now, Purpose Is Still Available to You
I found mine with no money, no certainty, and a future I couldn't control. If it was still available to me there, it's available to you now, whatever your version of "there" looks like.
The whisper hasn't stopped. It's just waiting for you to get quiet enough to hear it.
